5 Security Things to Know for the Week of June 15

Like it or not, Monday is upon us. Here are five items making news that can help you kick off your work week in style - or at least a little more informed.

Point taken: With point-of-sale breaches continuing in earnest, the FBI issued an alert to businesses about the Punkey malware, a new threat strain that our researchers just discovered.

Cash is king: Trustwave released its 2015 Trustwave Global Security Report to much fanfare. The report is filled with many eye-opening findings, including the massive ROI that cybercriminals can earn as a result of malware infection campaigns.

Executive orders: In hopes of stemming government breaches, the White House released a new document detailing security rules for federal agencies. Meanwhile, NIST issued fresh guidance (PDF) around critical infrastructure security.

Collared: Authorities charged nearly 50 people in connection with financial fraud in Europe. The alleged thieves used a combination of man-in-middle, phishing and malware attacks to divert money from victims and into attacker-owned bank accounts.

Patch batch: IT administrators get off relatively easily this month, but if you haven't seen, here is a summary of June's Patch Tuesday release from Microsoft. Update your systems!

Dan Kaplan is manager of online content at Trustwave and a former IT security reporter and editor.
