The days when security departments set up alarms just to sit and wait for alerts are long gone. Today’s cyber climate requires a proactive, adaptive approach to security. Combining efforts that include log and event analysis with technology like endpoint detection and response and actions that include threat hunting is an effective blend. But for some security organizations that have limited internal resources and are impacted by the cybersecurity talent gap, this is a tall order to execute.
But more and more security leaders are realizing that as much as they’d prefer to handle these responsibilities internally, they need to look elsewhere for additional help. It’s a tough decision to make, but one that could ultimately be the difference between thwarting a major security incident or falling flat and risking immense losses from both a reputational and cost perspective.
“Many times organizations may care about security, but don’t have the right talent to tackle the problem set that they have,” says Mark Whitehead, vice president of Trustwave SpiderLabs, Americas. “There are a lot of questions that they need to ask themselves and answer before looking for that help to bolster the efforts of their cybersecurity initiative.”
